GEELONG INDEPENDENT CHAPEL CASE

The rapidly rising town of Geelong, which has hitherto been without an Independent interest, has lately received considerable accessions to its community, of that denomination of Christians, together with a faithful Minister, whose character and experience entitle him to esteem and confidence, and whose labors, seconded by those of a zealous, a united, and an affectionate people, it is confidently believed, will be followed with the most happy results.

A Church has been formed in accordance with the principles maintained by the Congregational Union of Great Britain, of pious and devoted persons, all of whom bring with them to this colony satisfactory testimonials from the several Churches with which they were connected at home.

This little band of Christians are desirous of adding their endeavours to those of other denominations, to further the best interests of their adopted country.

At present Divine worship is conducted in a room, which has been hired at a moderate rental, and fitted up as a temporary sanctuary, but which is not at all calculated for a permanent resting place.

The friends of the cause are anxious, therefore, to erect a substantial edifice, in an eligible part of the town, selected for that purpose, worthy of the denomination to which they belong, and commensurate to the wants of their increasing community, but are unable to accomplish this object without the assistance of the Christian public.

To secure this assistance they now make their respectful and earnest appeal, and they do so in perfect confidence that it will meet with a prompt and kind response.

Subscriptions will be thankfully received and acknowledged by Mr. Robert Smith, of the firm of Fulton and Smith, Melbourne, by the Rev. Benjamin Cuzens, Geelong, and by any person appointed and authorised by them to collect for this cause.

I beg to recommend the application of this Christian body to the liberality of the Christian public.
